Alexis H.’s Journey from Foster Care to Parenthood
By Averey Roof, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Ohio Children’s Alliance
Between creating lesson plans, grading papers, and caring for her young son, Alexis H. often reflects on how far she has come. Now a third-year teacher and devoted mother, her life is grounded in purpose, structure, and care. But the stability she has built did not come easily—it was forged through early loss, time spent in foster care, and a firsthand understanding of how vital meaningful support can be for families working to move forward.
At just 13 years old, Alexis entered the foster care system after the passing of her grandmother. With no one else able to care for her, she found herself navigating the system during a time of profound loss and uncertainty. That experience emphasized the importance of having someone to rely on during moments of uncertainty.
After aging out of foster care at 18, Alexis stepped into a new chapter as a mother to her son, Grayson. Becoming a young mother brought joy, purpose, and an even deeper sense of responsibility. Through her own experience, Alexis gained firsthand insight into the financial pressure many parents face, especially when it comes to meeting their children’s most basic needs. “Even when parents go out of their way to make sure their kids have what they need,” she shared, “they might be the ones going without.”
To ease this struggle for young parents, the Ohio Children’s Alliance’s MLK Day Diaper and Wipes Drive is designed to help meet basic needs. By providing families with essential items, the drive aims to reduce daily stress and allow parents to focus on caring for their children. As Alexis shared, diapers and wipes aren’t optional, but the expense adds up quickly. Those trade-offs can mean skipped meals or falling behind on other necessities. “Having diapers and wipes given to you, even as a one-time thing, [is] enough for groceries,” she shared. “It’s the little things that [create a] snowball effect that not only support you financially, but they also support you emotionally.”
As Alexis continued building her life as a parent and professional, access to structured support became essential. Programs provided guidance and resources during a critical period and helped her strengthen that foundation and move forward with confidence.
Looking ahead, Alexis is hopeful about her family’s future. She wants her son to grow up knowing that opportunity is always within reach. “I want him to be the most successful adult, whatever his heart desires,” she said. “I want [my son] to know that the doors are always open.” Her vision is one of possibility, where her family feels supported, loved, and free to explore paths that align with their dreams.
Alexis’ journey shows how resilience, support, and small acts of care can create a lasting impact. Just as consistent guidance helped her navigate challenges and build a stable life for her family, the MLK Jr. Day Diapers and Wipes Drive provides practical, immediate support to families striving for the same stability. By giving essential items like diapers and wipes to families like Alexis’, the drive not only meets basic needs—it also empowers parents to focus on growth, opportunity, and the bright futures they envision for their children.
